How costume design is more influential than fashion

As many of you may know, the new Disney movie Cruella came out and everyone is raving about it! From the fashion to Emma Stone's portrayal of the character, Cruella, the movie was a masterpiece. I even noticed many of the iconic outfits from the movie being recreated on social media platforms. This shows how costume design plays a big role in the fashion industry.

Normally, people tend to watch movies/tv shows over fashion shows. Therefore, many fashion trends originate from the costume design/wardrobe. Speaking from experience, the show Outerbanks had a major impact on the 2020 summer style. Many teenagers recreated some iconic looks from the show which sparked a huge fashion trend globally. Stores that carried clothing which fit the trend benefited as sales increased for them.

Another example is the show Pretty Little Liars. Costume designer, Mandi Lane, was interviewing for her job when she said, "If you let me make fashion the fifth character on this show, people will watch it just for the clothes." She was then hired and the signature looks of the characters were talked about very often during the show's running years. Even now you see Pretty Little Liars inspired outfits. Websites sprang-up, dedicated to discussing the characters’ outfits in each episode. Mandi also said, "I have seen feather earrings and black-and-white-stripe dresses in stores,” as she believed that the show was influencing retail.
