Problems in the glamour industry: Transphobia

Not only does the fashion industry lack inclusivity of transgender models, but the glamour industry in general suffers a lack of transgender representation.

However, Valentina Sampaio was cast by Victoria Secret as the first openly transgender model. She made it on the covers of Vogue Paris, Brazilian and German Vogue.

Just yesterday, Leyna Bloom became the first transgender woman of color to model in a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Leyna Bloom was also one of the first openly transgender models during New York Fashion Week of September 2017 as well as the first transgender woman of color to appear in Vogue India in October 2017.

Sadly, there have been many instances where transphobia was expressed in Hollywood.

The actress, Laverne Cox, made history in 2014 as the first transgender person to be nominated in any acting category at the Emmys. To this day, she is still the only transgender person to be nominated in an acting category.

Unfortunately, Laverne was the victim of a transphobic attack. While she was on a walk with her friend in LA, a man came up to them and asked her friend for the time. As her friend gives the man the time, the man said, "Guy or girl?" He then physically attacked Laverne's friend.

Another instance when transphobia was seen in Hollywood was in the cast for the movie The Danish Girl. Eddie Redmayne played Lili Elbe, a transgender pioneer. However, the actor who played Lili Elbe was not transgender. Many transgender actresses could have played the role, but they chose to have a guy play the role of Lili. This shows transphobia and the lack of representation amongst transgender actors and actresses in Hollywood.
